People ask me all the time if I have had any weird cravings. And I truthfully haven't. You hear stories of women waking their significant others up at 3 o'clock in the morning with a specific food demand that they must have right that second. Fearing the wrath of a pregnant lady the significant other gets up and goes to steak n' shake for the half mint, half strawberry shake or McDonalds for the Big Mac with extra sauce and fries from Burger King. Not me - So Alex, you're welcome. I'm a super low maintenance pregnant lady (when it comes to food cravings only. ha)
One thing I am eating a lot more of than I was pre-pregnancy is dairy products. Prior to pregnancy I ate cereal with milk a couple times a week and yogurt every once in awhile and I might have a glass of milk with spaghetti but a 1/2 gallon container of milk went bad many times before we could finish it. (Alex literally only drinks milk when he eats cereal and that is a pretty rare occasion.) Now I drink milk daily, sometimes twice a day so we're going through a gallon or more a week. It tastes better than it did before. I'm also eating more yogurt, specifically greek yogurt. It always tasted too heavy and chalky to me before. Now I like it. And then there is ranch. I could take it or leave it 5 months ago. Now I want it with fresh veggies. I think all that is just to say that I need more calcium now that I'm growing two sets of skeletal systems so I make sure to ingest enough so my babies don't start taking the calcium from my bones.
Also, speaking of dairy products, I LOVE ice cream. (no, ice cream with pickles isn't a universal pregnant lady thing - gross!) I could eat ice cream every day pre-pregnancy. (I said could, not that I did eat it every day.) That hasn't changed. I do try to limit the amount of ice cream I eat since I'm supposed to be watching my sugar intake and there is already a lot of sugar in just plain old milk - and don't even get me started on all the holiday sweets - but I probably have a bowl or bar at home or a cone via McDonald's drive thru once every other week. That's called self control.
So no, no super strange cravings. It's more like ongoing aversions to smells and textures so when Alex asks what I want for dinner he usually gets an "I don't know" mostly because I really don't know what will smell or taste good or sit well. One wrong move and my stomach is pissed at me for the next 16 hours. And the aversion could be different tomorrow than it was today so it's a constant guessing game of what can I eat tonight?
When we are traveling and we have to grab a bite to eat on the go Alex will list off options for me - McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Arby's, TBell, KFC, Skyline, Penn Station, etc. I can always list the things I don't want but I can't usually list anything I do want so I usually just let him pick and choose the least revolting sounding thing on the menu. Mac n' cheese and mashed potatoes are always a good choice so KFC usually goes over well. I just can't eat the chicken because the texture is still a big no-no. But hey, at the end of the day my belly is full of cheese and potatoes and my babies are happy so I just roll with it.
I've already written about how I've basically just reverted back to childhood with the palate of a 5 year old - apple sauce, cottage cheese, mac n' cheese, butter noodles, etc. But a recent addition to the list of 'safe' foods is Indian cuisine. I liked Indian before pregnancy. We didn't get it often mostly because we're cheap. It was a yummy treat once every other month or so. But now it's pretty much the only thing that consistently sounds good so we've been eating it a lot more. There is a new Indian restaurant in Maineville called Klair's. It is all vegetarian and it is all delicious. We've tried several items on the menu. None have disappointed and they have the BEST naan. Right now I could eat Indian every day and not be mad. I guess the girls like ethnic foods. I hope that means they won't be picky eaters!
