Life has been a crazy whirlwind of events recently. The week of Oct 2 is kind of a blur as I was preparing for midterms, and getting ready to go home - including writing the melody/music for my toast song for Bethany's wedding. I wrote the lyrics on the plane to Arequipa back in August, but time seemed to have gotten away from me this semester and the lyrics sat sadly without a melody until 3 days before I left for the states. You'll find the lyrics at the bottom of this post : )
On Monday Oct. 10 I left my house to embark on a 27 hour journey home. After delayed flights, a missed flight, and an interesting conversation with a new friend on my longest flight, I was drinking ICE COLD diet pepsi and eating chocolate pudding in my parents car on the way home where Papa John's pizza and more Diet Pepsi would greet me (along with Matt and Bethany - I suppose they're an important part of this story...)
The days that followed are also somewhat of a blur. There were delicious meals, hilarious conversations, manicures and pedicures, cheesecake, hanging with the bridesmaids, decorating, decorating, and decorating, and a hilariously painful fall down the stairs resulting in a 3x2 bruise on my bum.
The rehearsal dinner finally came and I must say that Bethany looked absolutely stunning. I met a bunch of new people on the Vince side and was touched by Matt's groomsmen gift speech. They catered Bistro (the BEST italian restaurant in Findlay) so of course it was a delicious meal. Then we went to the church and played wedding for a couple hours. Practicing with the string quartet was good but a little nerve wracking. It became VERY apparent to me that I should have practiced more than twice in the semester prior to returning home... After the rehearsal the bridesmaids + Amy Couch + the BRIDE-to-be went to Olers for some good ol' mexican food and drinks. A good time was had by all : )
Saturday finally came. We went to tangles to get ready. The lovely ladies of Tangles did the hair and I did the make up. Then we were off to the church to get dressed and start the picture process. We took soooo many pictures there has to be at least 1 or 2 good ones ;) Then before we knew it the ceremony started and I was walking down the aisle to the beautiful sound of the strings filling the auditorium. There were a few tears by Father Seawell, mom, Eric (the pastor officiating the ceremony), and Matt. I think Bethany may have sniffled once or twice too. The ceremony was absolutely beautiful. Eric did a wonderful job. There were funny moments, serious moments, happy moments, and reflective moments. My song went even better than in the rehearsal and I think it added a nice touch to the ceremony.
The reception - how fun! The mad libs at the tables and the photo booth were a hit. The best man's toast was incredible. The whole time I was thinking "its a really good thing I wrote a song for this toast because there is no way I could top his with just words". After Fred (best man) was done, I came around the corner into view of Bethany with Abe and Adam close behind carrying my keyboard. Boy was she surprised! I introduced my song and sang. I could see that by the end of the first chorus she was crying. Afterwards we hugged for a really long time. I could tell that it was a gift she would never forget. I plan to record it when I get back to the states so that she'll have a copy of it forever.
Sunday morning I woke up reeeeeally early to pack and head out. After a few flights, a night in Lima, and a very helpful taxi driver, I was back in Arequipa. I landed and went straight to the university for classes. It was a rough day but now I'm back on a normal sleep schedule and have caught up on school work. Going home was a whirlwind but a complete blessing. I am so glad I was home to be part of Matt and Bethany's special day. The realization that they are married has not quite hit me yet. she is MARRIED. Bethany Vince. I like the sound of it.
In other news, I have a big concert tonight with the choir from San Pablo. We are performing Mozart's Missa Solemnis. I am the soprano soloist and I am not nearly as prepared as I should be. I have some pretty crazy runs and trills throughout the piece and am just praying I can whip it out tonight. I caught a wicked cold in the states because of the climate change that is still causing me vocal issues. Prayers, as always, are appreciated.
Here's my toast! It's called Five Years (because they dated for 5 years before finally getting hitched!):
