Two weeks ago my aunt who works at the university came up to me and told me I was going to sing on the 23rd. I didn't have time to ask questions and her statement did not sound like a suggestion. I didn't think about it much until last week when our director announced that Friday September 23rd is student appreciation day and in honor of students classes end at 10:45 and a talent show begins. I realized this is what my aunt was talking about. I went and talked to my aunt on Tuesday of this week to sign up for the talent show. I don't have much sheet music here but I have some lead sheets I made on my laptop. With the help of my friend Arianna I decided to sing "Head Over Feet" by Alanis Morisette. Did I mention I decided this yesterday? I received an e-mail from the director of student affairs yesterday morning with a run down of the show. At the end of the e-mail she said there would be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place act... I didn't realize it was a competition.
So today came (too quickly) and it hadn't hit me yet that I would be performing for a large portion of the student body in just a couple hours. I bought batteries on the way to school for my electric keyboard so I'd have one less cord to deal with on stage. My sister and mom came to watch me sing. There were shouting my name with huge smiles on their faces. So after much waiting in the beating down sun it was finally my time to perform. For some reason I was not nervous and I sang it like I'd been singing it all my life even though yesterday was the first day I looked at the chords. It was fantastic and all my Calvin friends were there cheering me on : )
We left a couple numbers after mine to eat lunch. It was the first lunch in a long time that my entire family was together for lunch. We talked about some of the acts before and after mine and what kind of music my family likes. My brother made me sing a little bit of my song since he couldn't come to the show. After lunch I went upstairs to upload 109 pictures to facebook and pack for our trip to Colca Canyon tomorrow. A few minutes later there was a knock at my door. I opened it. It was my mom.
"Erin?"
"Si?"
"Hablé con Lulu. Ganaste el concurso!" (I just spoke with Lulu - her sister who works at the university. You won the competition!)
"Gané?!" (I WON!?)
"Si mi hija. Ganaste. Estoy tan orgullosa de ti. Buen hecho!" (Yes, my daughter. You won. I am so proud of you. Good job!)
She gave me a hug and kiss and told me I could pick up my first place prize on Monday. Who would have thought!? I won!
Today was a great day. Tomorrow we leave for Colca Canyon. I'm sure I'll have many pictures and much to write when we return Sunday night.
Love & Hugs,
Erin
